Autumn in our city
Students of the 1st grade in District School Nova Subocka interpret mandatory reading works creatively. A picture story „Autumn in our city“ is interpreted by using imaginative activities. Students act out while the teacher reads the picture story. After a short conversation about the story, students draw and cut out the characters for their own picture story. They come up with their text and correctly match letters and words into a sentence. That is the way they create a new story with a few words and a few pictures. We are looking forward to their fresh stories.
Here is the link to a video that shows how students interpreted a mandatory reading story The Emperor's New Clothes written by Hans Christian Andersen. https://youtu.be/RztKItwYLqw It was interpreted in a combination class of the 1st and 2nd grade of District School in Piljenice during two school lessons full of various and fun activities. Students made castles that were a place of action. Using the origami technique, they made characters and talked about their personalities and actions. Students made new clothes for the emperor. They put the mixed-up parts of the story in the correct order. They recorded a video in which they thought of a sequel to the fairy tale themselves. Since World Tie Day was on the next day, students also made their ties with messages. Afterwards, they watched an animated film, and played a Wordwall quiz. Teacher Tatjana Dlouhi

Activity The mysterious bag -
This can be used in two ways (and we've used both):
The whole class reads fairy tales from one author - we read H.K. Andersen's fairy tales, then everyone chooses one fairy tale and prepares a mysterious bag with 3 threads - 3 things about their chosen fairy tale. One by one, these three things are brought out (starting with the hardest to guess), showing classmates who were trying to guess a fairy tale. The children enjoyed the activity so much that we sent our prepared bags, together with Andersen's fairy tale book, to a parallel class and gave a week them to guess all the mysterious bags. The chi
Everyone makes a bag for the book he/she has chosen to read. In this case, there is no guessing, but the student shows what is in the bag and tells why he/she has chosen to put these things - how they relate to the book he/she has read. The bag can also be designed by writing on top of the book's author, title, information about the main character and decorated.
Activity The reading challenge
To encourage children to read books in their spare time, there are teachers who challenge students to compete in reading - who will read more pages - the teacher or the children in the whole class together. Sometimes one of the students volunteers to help the teacher. After the holidays, the pages are counted and it is a great pleasure that the class is able to overtake the teacher.
After each book they have read, students complete a reading report. Reports can take various forms, but they always reflect - the author of the book, the illustrator, the title, the description of the main characters, the main event, express child`s opinion about the book.
Reading activity by dipping into the content. Intended for reading an unfamiliar text - worksheet in the appendix.
Activity Infographics When getting to know the author's biography, the children can create a poster - an infographic, which reflects the most important facts about the author's life and work.
Activity Puppet Theatre The children can create performances about the book they have read - both get into the characters themselves and perform a puppet show. Picture attached.
Activity Making a game about a bookIf you read a book together in class (we read Charlotte`s Web), then you can split class in groups and create board games to play together.
