Book evening dedicated to Taras Ševčenko
Think, read, learn what is foreign, but don't avoid what is ours… are Ševčenko's words that students from our school who attend Ukrainian language classes try to respect.
Together with their teacher Tatjana Lasek Žagar they took part in a literature evening dedicated to this author on 19th March in Lipovljani under the organization of KUD Karpati from Lipovljani. They made this evening richer by performing one of his poems that was set to music.
Ševčenko tried to show a way to freedom through his book. His importance for the Ukrainians, as well as for the whole world was emphasized.
A boy from Ukraine, Bogdan, joined students from our school recently.
In the words of one Ukrainian prophet, he said it's not all the same to any of us what is happening in Ukraine these days, as it wasn't to Ševčenko in his time.

Book Night 2022
We joined the manifestation Book Night this year as well. After two years of virtual activities, we finally had the chance to organize a program for our students at school which was led by our librarian. It was held around noon in our school's hall. Although the name of this event is Book Night, we wanted to show that we can love our books always and at any place, no matter the time of the day.
This year is important for two big anniversaries in literature – the 400th anniversary of the birth of French author Moliere, and the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the most famous Croatian authors Vesna Parun, so we began the event by reading some of her children's poetry.
The 3rd graders really liked their mandatory reading for this month, Mice and cats upside down, so they read a few parts from this collection of poems written by Luko Paljetak.
Next, students who participated in the manifestation LiDraNo this year presented their work.
In the end, students from 5th to 7th grade read some of their poems. The librarian also prepared a quiz on the books for the 4th graders.
We can't wait for the next Book Night – reading makes us richer and more confident, it helps us build our knowledge which no one can take away from us.

A Gift
Once upon a time, there lived a mother with her son in a small house. They worked in the field and were very dirty - their face, hands, feet, and clothes. People made fun of them.
The mother told her son not to be sad because you can wash everything except a dirty cheek. And each of us carries our cross through life. When the mother raised enough money, she bought her son a beautiful shirt and a pair of trousers. The boy was excited about the gift. His mother told him that the most beautiful gifts do not come in gold and shiny packages but from the heart. They sat down at the table and had dinner. The boy was old enough and decided to go on a trip. He got into his sailboat and sailed away.
A strong wind blew, and he had to lower his sail. He sailed and sailed. The wind was slowly getting weaker. When the wind completely stopped blowing, he noticed a school of colorful fish. The boy admired how different they are, and how they all swam as one. The evening was slowly descending, and the stars appeared in the sky. One particular star that was the biggest led him to the island.
When the boy arrived on the island, people there greeted him. He promised to give them something back. People were eagerly awaiting the gifts. They were very impatient and wanted to see what gifts they got. They could hardly wait. Soon the boy gave them a box.
People thought he cheated on them because there was nothing in the box.
The boy told them that not all gifts come in gold packages. And that the most beautiful gifts come from the heart. Suddenly a warmth entered the hearts of these people. The boy proudly put his hat on his head and set off to look for more friends. Who knows, maybe he'll find you, too?

Verses under the Linden Tree
As a part of the Croatian Book Month 2020, a branch of the Matrix Croatica in Lipovljani presented a collection of poems by Ljubica Stublija "Stihom pod lipom" (Verses under the Linden Tree). Only a part of Ljubica's work was presented among almost a hundred pages of the book. The title was suggested by Dragutin Pasarić at one of the poetry evenings in Lipovljani, and the cover was painted by Vlatka Vidiček-Dam. The book was edited by Tatjana Dlouhi and graphically prepared by Ljubica's son, Željko Stublija.
Ljubica found themes and motives in her village, in her family, orchard, neighborhood… Patriotic themes are especially close to Ljubica, as well as landscape, love, and reflection.
Ljubica is an example of how we can learn something new all our lives, how to express our feelings in the Croatian language and how the rural environment does not have to limit what we write and publish.
The book is available in the Reading Room of the National Library in Lipovljani during November and December. Come and read!
